Morgens um 6.30 Uhr geht unser Bus nach Bagamojo. Das ist jener Ort, an dem die Sklaven aus dem Binnenland Afrikas gesammelt und nach Sansibar verschifft wurden. In den Jahrzehnten vor 1875, dem Jahr der Abschaffung, kamen die europäischen Missionare und kämpften für das Verbot der Sklaverei. Mit 1867 wurde hier die erste Kirche gegründet, was seither als Beginn des Christentums in Ostafrika gilt. Dies ist auch der Grund, dass die Menschen so viel Vertrauen in die Kirchen haben: sie haben sie mit von der Sklaverei befreit und medizinische Einrichtungen und Schulen gebaut.

Our bus to Bagamojo starts at 6.30 in the morning. That is the town, where the slaves from the inner countries of Africa were gathered and shipped to Zanzibar. In the years before 1875, the year of the abolition, the European missionaries fought for the prohibition of slavery.

In 1867 the first church was founded here, what since counts as the start of Christianity in East Africa. This is also the reason, why so many people here have trust in the church: it helped to free them from slavery and built medical facilities as well as schools.

Unterwegs besuchen wir die Schule Mt. Everest. Herr Everest, den wir bereits am Sonntag beim Gottesdienst kennengelernt haben, hat diese Schule gebaut und sie unter die Leitung der St. Josef Schwestern gestellt. Insgesamt besuchen 800 Schülerinnen und Schüler im Alter von 3 – 14 Jahren die Schule, ca. 300 davon wohnen im Internat.

On the way we visit the school Mt. Everest. Mister Everest, whom we already had met at the mass last Sunday, built this school and put it under the guidance of the St. Joseph Sisters. All in all 800 students, aged 3-14, attend the school, appr. 300 of them live in the boarding school.

Dann geht’s weiter über Stock und Stein zu einem Feld mit ca. fünf Hektar. Sr. Betty hat das gekauft um eine weitere Schule und eine Krankenstation zu bauen. Sie hofft auf einen  Engel, der die Finanzen bringt. Sr. Betty erklärt uns noch die verschiedenen Baumarten, von denen die härteste für die berühmten Holzschnitzereien des hier lebenden Stammes berühmt sind.

Afterwards we continue to a field of about 5 hectares. Sr. Betty bought it to build another school and a medical station. She is hoping for an angel, to bring the finances. Sr. Betty shows us the different types of trees here, of which the hardest one is popular because of the artistic wood carvings of the local tribe.

Dann gelangen wir nach Bagamojo. Vor dem Museum steht ein Tresor mit dem Gewicht von 1,5 Tonnen. Hergestellt 1875 in Wien und von den Missionaren hierher transportiert. Das Museum zeigt uns die Missionierung der Afrikaner und ihre Kolonialisierung durch die Deutschen. Die Kirche stammt aus der Zeit der englischen Besatzung. Mit einem Essen am Strand endet dieser Ausflugstag.

Then we reach Bagamojo. In front of the museum a safe with the weight of 1.5 tons can be found. Made in Vienna in 1875 and transported here by missionaries. The museum shows us the missionary work in Africa and the colonialisation by the Germans. The church is from the time of English occupation. With a picnic at the beach our day ends here.
